In 2016, the National Science Foundation initiated a new funding opportunity to address the lack of diverse and inclusive leadership in geoscience. The initiative, Geoscience Opportunities for Leadership in Diversity (GOLD), resulted in five pilot projects focused on a range of different approaches to increasing diversity, equity, inclusion & social justice in programs through leadership change and management.
