During the second phase of the FIELD project, the PI team will convene a 4-day immersive leadership development institute for field geoscientists to:
- Discuss the results of the field culture assessment;
- Engage in practical skills training such as bystander intervention and diversity leadership;
- Collaboratively develop new approaches to reduce the exclusionary nature of field culture.
During the institute at the Colorado State University Mountain CampusĀ on October 3-7, 2018, thirty participants will share a sense of camaraderie and inspiration for field activity with the goal of making it more accessible to everyone. During the FIELD course we will examine issues including:
- The transformative nature of field activity through the lens of ethnographic studies conducted by education specialists
- The unique and beneficial aspects of field work and education that both compliment, and hinder, inclusivity
- How efforts to advance diversity (e.g. bystander intervention) can be complicated by field conditions
- How a multidisciplinary approach to can inspire a love of field activity in a wider range of participants
Participants in the FIELD Institute will be encouraged to work together to develop solutions to their own issues of inclusion in field settings through discussion, breakout sessions, and group feedback.
